Frequently asked questions
What is the return policy?
Our goal is for every customer to be totally satisfied with their purchase. If this isn't the case, let us know and we'll do our best to work with you to make it right.
How do I order a custom knife?
Fill out a contact form and I will start a text chain with you. From there, we can bounce ideas off of each other and pick designs and materials. The process can take up to an hour, if you're mind is not already set on something specific.
If I order a custom, is there a down payment?
Yes, there is a down payment required of roughly 1/3 of the total cost of the knife. The down payment secures your spot on the commission list and I will then be able to give you an adequate completion time range. Final payment due within 30 days of completion. If the knife requires personal engravings, payment must be made in full before that step.
I heard you sharpen your customs for free?
Yes, I do sharpen my knives for free for local customers. While I do not accept knives through mail for sharpening, I will accept them for needed repairs.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping is included in the price anywhere to the US. I do not ship outside of the country due to risks involving customs enforcement.
Do you forge your own knives?
I am what is known as a stock removal knife maker. I start with bars of steel that are already the thickness that I need them to be. They are cut to shape, drilled, heat treated, bevels ground, handled, then sharpened in that order. Forging refers to pressing or smacking steel with a hammer to shape it. I do neither. If I use San Mai or Damascus for your custom it will be sourced from other reputable small time makers like myself, and you will be part of that decision making process.
Do you only use Nitro-V steel?
No, I am equipped to use any steel of your liking, Nitro-V is just my base level steel. I chose it as such due to it's performance/cost ratio. It is one of the best stainless steels before getting into the powdered "super steels". Nitro-V is a form of AEB-L altered for added hardness. It is known for its high toughness, fine grain structure and it's ability to retain a fine edge. Mine is heat treated to 62-63 HRC.
Do you recommend wood or synthetic handle materials?
Personally, I enjoy synthetic materials (micarta, G10) for care free use in wet environments like the kitchen or on the water. If wooden materials are not properly cared for, water will eventually penetrate the material and cause expansion. Expansion will destroy the epoxy bond to the tang or liner. Stabilized wood is more impenetrable, but still requires some care. I recommend blade wax such as Pelican Paste brand to protect wood and high carbon knives.
Is my knife dishwasher safe?
Short answer, no.
Long answer, heck no.
Dishwashers are high heat, and high heat weakens epoxy bonds.
